A breakaway battery monitor is a device installed inside the cabin of the tow vehicle, near the driver, to provide a visual and/or sound warning if the breakaway battery charge falls below a specified level.
There has been confusion as to whether this was optional or required in NSW. Under current legislation there is no requirement for a battery monitor for the breakaway system.
Although it is not law, it is recommended when towing floats, boats, caravans or trailers in general that a breakaway monitor is used especially as many trailers can spend extended times unused, hence the possibility of not charging.
A cost effect monitoring system is a Oricom Bluetooth Wireless System that links to an app on your phone or a Hummingbird system with Bluetooth to a monitor by the driver.
